Professor Jan Clarkson, BSc, BDS, PhD, FDS, RCS(Ed), FDS(Paed), RCS(Ed), RCPSG
Jan Clarkson graduated in dentistry from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1987 and after 10 years at the University of Manchester, she entered the Specialist List for Paediatric Dentistry and joined the Dental Health Services Research Unit at the University of Dundee. Since 1998 she has been the Effective Dental Practice Programme Director, conducting high quality research and promoting implementation of research evidence in dental primary care. She is a founding member of the Cochrane Oral Health Group and her role as Joint Co-Ordinating Editor has influenced her research activity. Jan is Director of the Scottish Dental Practice Based Research Network which has undertaken unique trials in healthcare, both in clinical practice and education. As Lead for Clinical Effectiveness, she is responsible for the development, production and dissemination of guidance in priority areas for dentistry in Scotland and her research focuses on the translation of evidence into practice. Jan was recently appointed as an Associate Postgraduate Dental Dean for NHS Education for Scotland.
Massimo Del Fabbro
Massimo Del Fabbro, BSc, PhD. Graduate in Biology (1989), PhD in Human Physiology (1994) at the University of Milan, Italy. Associate Professor in Oral Diseases at the University of Milan, Department of Biomedical, Surgical & Dental Sciences. Coordinator of the PhD course in Oral Sciences, University of Milan. Director of the Research Centre for Oral Health, University of Milan. Head of the Section of Oral Physiopathology at the Galeazzi Orthopedic Institute, Milan. Lecturer and coordinator of courses in four degree programs at University of Milan (Medicine, Dentistry, Dental Hygiene, Medical Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine) on the topics: periodontology, implantology, osseointegration and bone biology, physiology of bone grafts, biomaterials for bone regeneration, transplantation and tissue engineering in dentistry. Lecturer of the Specialization School in Oral Surgery (University of Milan). Involved in the following research topics: Physiopathology of periodontal and peri-implant tissues, biology of osseointegration, graft physiology, tissue regeneration techniques, tissue engineering, biology of platelet concentrates, systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Reviewer of the Cochrane Oral Health Group (COHG) for endodontic surgery topics. Founding member and Directory Board member of the Academy of non transfusional hemocomponents (ANTHEC). Member of the Italian Society of Endodontology (SIE), Italian Society for the Study of Bisphosphonates in Odontostomatology (SISBO). Member of CiMaINa (Interdisciplinary Centre of Nanostructured Materials and Interfaces). Lecturer at several Universities worldwide on implant and endodontic topics (e.g. Tel Aviv, New York, Goteborg). Associate Editor of Journal of Investigative and Clinical Dentistry. Editorial Board member of several international impacted Journals. Author of more than 300 publications, of which more than 210 indexed on Pubmed, three books and about 30 book chapters. Zbys Fedorowicz (PhD, MSc DPH, BDS, L.D.S RCS Eng.) is the lead methodologist on a Breast Cancer Clinical Guideline currently being developed by the Breast Cancer Society of Bahrain for the health services of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Over the past 10 years his postings have included advisor roles to the President of the Supreme Council of Health, advisor at the Prime Minister’s Office and the Minister of Health, in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Founder and Director of Cochrane BAHRAIN (The Cochrane Collaboration) since 2005 and a member of the Cochrane Steering Group (2004-2010).
Chairman of the Evidence-based Medicine Committee WHO (EMAME) (2005-2012). Professor and Head of Research at the College of Medicine AMA International University of Bahrain (2012-3). Editor, scientific board or international advisory board member for a number of international peer reviewed journals including BMJ, Clinical Evidence, Journal of Evidence-Based Medicine and clinical guidelines developers e.g. SIGN NICE GRADE Working Group Member (2010 to the present).
He has published 50+ Cochrane systematic reviews with topics in: Breast Cancer/Dermatology/Eyes &Vision/ Heart/ENT/Cystic Fibrosis & Genetic Disorders/ Colorectal Cancer/Multiple Sclerosis/Oral Health/ Metabolic & Endocrine Disorders.
Extensive range of publications in high IF peer reviewed journals on Evidence-based Medicine and research methodology relevant to systematic reviews and clinical guidelines.
Thomas graduated from the University of Glasgow, Scotland in 2008 prior to completing Dental Foundation Training in Glasgow and Dumfries before moving to Dundee. Since February 2009 Thomas has been a member of the Scottish Dental Practice Based Research Network (SDPBRN) Steering Committee promoting the implementation of evidence-based practice in Scotland. In 2011 he was appointed as Clinical Research Fellow/ Honorary Specialty Training Registrar in Restorative Dentistry in the Dental Health Services Research Unit at the University of Dundee Dental School. He is the Clinical Research Fellow of the ‘Improving the Quality of Dentistry’ (IQuaD) Clinical trial. This multicentre randomised controlled trial is comparing oral hygiene advice and periodontal instrumentation for the prevention and management of periodontal disease in dentate adults attending dental primary care. His research interests also include the promotion and implementation of evidence based practice in primary dental care. Thomas has been involved in both primary and secondary research through his respective work with the Scottish Dental Practice Based Research Network and as a Clinical Editor and systematic reviewer at the Cochrane Collaboration Oral Health Group.
Dr Hagay Shemesh
Hagay was born and raised in Tel Aviv, Israel and graduated the dental faculty in Jerusalem, Israel in 1990. He graduated from the post-graduate endodontic program in Jerusalem in 2000 and then immigrated to the Netherlands and started teaching the undergraduate endodontic course at the Academic Centre for dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). He then started his PhD project and graduated in 2009 cum laude from the University of Amsterdam defending his PhD thesis "new insights into the root canal wall". He is chair of the division of endodontology and program director of the post-academic endodontic program in ACTA, is the Dutch representative to the European Association of Endodontology, member of the scientific board of the Dutch endodontic society and member of the scientific referee board of the Journal of Endodontics.

From January 2014 Degree achieved in National qualifying examination of Associate Professor (8 years validity) – waiting for a University “calling” .

Tanya is a Reader in Clinical Biostatistics in the School of Dentistry, University of Manchester. She joined the School of Dentistry as a Lecturer to teach Biostatistics to staff and postgraduate students and to provide statistical advice to researchers. As a Senior Lecturer and then Reader, Tanya has developed her own research portfolio in dental health sciences, working towards improving clinical process and practice and evaluating interventions for improving oral health. Her research interests can broadly be classified into evidence synthesis of healthcare interventions, the screening and diagnosis of oral disease, and the effectiveness of health care interventions through clinical trials. Working alongside clinical and methodological colleagues, Tanya leads the design and analysis of randomised controlled trials and other studies of interventions for improving oral health.
Tanya is a Statistical Editor with Cochrane Oral Health and the Cochrane Diagnostic Test Accuracy Editorial Team. She is also a Steering Group Member of the North West Evidence Synthesis Network, a joint undertaking of the Univerity of Manchester and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
