 Hany Mohamed Aly Ahmed

Dr Hany Mohamed Aly Ahmed (HMA Ahmed) was born in Göttingen, Germany. He is an Egyptian and was graduated from Faculty of Dentistry, Ain Shams University (ASU), Egypt, with a Bachelor's Degree in Dental Sciences (B.D.S.) in 2002. He started his clinical postgraduate program in Endodontics with a Higher Dental Diploma (H.D.D.) degree in 2006, and joined a Master Degree program (M.Sc.D.) at the School of Dental Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in 2009 which was converted to Ph.D. in 2011.

Dr. Ahmed has been granted a number of awards for his research on the application of Portland cements in Endodontics including the IADR (SE Asian division) for the best laboratory research in 2014. He has also been granted several awards, in Malaysia, Singapore, as a supervisor for several research projects. In 2012, Dr. Ahmed has introduced a new classification for endo-perio lesions, which was published in ENDO. Recently, with experts from Brazil, UK and Hong Kong, he has introduced a new system for classifying the root and root canal morphology, accessory canals and anomalies. Currently, he is a Senior Lecturer of Endodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya, and he is leading a number of projects related to root canal morphology and endodontic biomaterials in Malaysia and other countries in Europe, Australia, Africa and Asia. Dr. Ahmed has published over 70 articles in recognized international journals such as International Endodontic Journal and Journal of Endodontics. He is a scientific reviewer and editorial board member in several national and international journals. He also is the Deputy Editor-In-Chief of the European Endodontic Journal.

Dr. Allen Ali Nasseh graduated from Northwestern University Dental School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine Post Doctoral Endodontics program, where he also received a Masters in Medical Sciences in Bone Physiology. Dr. Nasseh has been a clinical instructor and a lecturer at the Harvard Postdoctoral Endodontic program since 1997 where he maintains a senior faculty position. Dr. Nasseh is the former editor of the Harvard Dental Bulletin and the current endodontic editor of several national and international dental journals. He is the President and CEO of Real World Endo (RealWorldEndo.com) and is also endodontic consultant and advisor on biomaterials and medical devices to several centers. He is a member of the Clinical Needs Advisory Board for the NIH/NIDCR based Michigan-Pittsburgh-Wyss Center for regenerative Medicine and the Materials and Instruments Committee for the American Dental Association (ADA). He is Endodontic Editor to several peer reviewed journals and periodicals. Based on Google Analytics, over 2 million minutes of his educational videos were watched last year. Dr. Nasseh continues to practice clinically and has completed over 25,000 documented endodontic cases in his private clinic in Copley Square Boston, MA (Microsurgicalendo.com).

Lars Bjørndal (born 1963) graduated in 1988 as a dentist from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. In1992: Ph.D. thesis on the topic: Caries progression in enamel and the pulp-dentin organ using thin undemineralized tooth sections. In 2011: Dr. Odont. Thesis entitled: Endodontic treatment: reason, prevention and quality - shaping factors. From 1993-1998: Assistant professor at the Department of Cariology and Endodontics, University of Copenhagen. 1999-2001: Received specific postgraduate endodontic specialist courses in collaboration with the universities in Copenhagen, Denmark, Malmö and Gothenburg, Sweden. From 1998: Associate professor at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and Head of Endodontic. In 2012 LB was visiting Scholar at Loma Linda University, US. From 2012: Head of the Special Clinical Unit receiving referrals at the Institute of Odontology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. One day weekly LB is in clinical practice devoted endodontic referrals. LB has been past Secretary in the Scandinavian Endodontic Society (SES) from 1999-2001. In 2007 and 2016 LB hosted the SES biennial congress in Denmark. LB is second time President of the Danish National Endodontic Society (2014-), and country representative for the European Society of Endodontology (ESE), as well as a certified member of ESE. Besides numerous national post-graduate General Dental Practitioner hands-on courses covering endodontic treatments, LB has been giving lectures in Europe, India, Asia, North and South America. The topics have been within the field of deep caries lesion pathology, treatments and quality-shaping factors concerning endodontic treatments. LB has authored and co-authored numerous international and national articles, including book chapters and reviews, and is at present reviewer in several international Journals. Dr Christos Boutsioukis

Dr Christos Boutsioukis

Dr. Christos Boutsioukis received his DDS degree in 2003 and his postgraduate certificate in Endodontics in 2006 from the University of Thessaloniki in Greece. From 2007-2010 he divided his time between the University of Thessaloniki, the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) and the Physics of Fluids group at the University of Twente in the Netherlands, towards completion of the PhD degree. In 2011 he became postdoctoral researcher in the Physics of Fluids group, University of Twente and in 2013 he joined ACTA, where he is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Endodontology. He has authored or co-authored more than 30 papers in peer-reviewed journals and four book chapters and serves as a referee for several international journals. His main research interest lies in experimental and computational methods to study the dynamics of root canal irrigation.

 Peter Briggs

Peter Briggs BDS (Hons), MSc, MRD, FDS RCS(Eng) Senior Lecturer / Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Bart’s and Royal London Dental Institute and Queen Mary’s University London. Specialist Practitioner, Hodsoll House Dental Practice, Kent, England Peter qualified in 1983 from King’s College Hospital School of Medicine and Dentistry. He then underwent higher specialist training and was awarded a Winston Churchill Travel Scholarship in 1994. He was appointed an NHS Consultant in 1995 at St. George’s and King’s College Hospitals. He worked within Multi-Disciplinary Teams and was Clinical Director in South West London for many years helping to build a vibrant and well respected clinical and training Unit. After 20 years Peter moved to QMUL & Bart’s Healthcare Trusts as part time Senior Lecturer / Consultant. He was President of British Society of Prosthodontics (BSSPD) in 2014/15. In 2004 he established a part time, specialist restorative referral practice at Hodsoll House, in Farningham, Kent. Peter has authored, or co-authored, over 70 peer-reviewed publications with recent emphasis on education and training of clinical dentistry. His main focus has been on clinical outcome. He has spoken at UK and European Conferences and looks forward to supporting the 2019 ESE conference in Austria. In 2018 Peter was appointed by Health Education England (HEE) as the Regional Postgraduate Dental Dean for London and Kent, Surrey and Sussex (LKSS). He currently leads the Workforce Intelligence work stream of the Advancing Dental Care, a national project overseen by Health Education England, with the goal of future-proofing the composition, training and educational needs of the future workforce. In 2019 Peter has been closely involved with the NHS commission and validation of Tier 2 complexity practitioners in Endodontics within London. In his spare time his main interests are walking and exploring the UK, and Europe, with his wife Karen.

Dr Josette Camilleri

Dr Josette Camilleri

Josette Camilleri obtained her Bachelor in Dental Surgery and Master of Philosophy in Dental Surgery from the University of Malta. She completed her doctoral degree, supervised by the late Professor Tom Pitt Ford, at Guy’s Hospital, King’s College London.

She has worked at the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering, Faculty for the Built Environment, University of Malta and at the Department of Restorative Dentistry, Faculty of Dental Surgery, University of Malta. She is currently a senior academic at the School of Dentistry, College of Medical and Dental Sciences, Institute of Clinical Sciences, University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. Her research interests include endodontic materials such as root-end filling materials and root canal sealers, with particular interest in mineral trioxide aggregate; Portland cement hydration and other cementitious materials used as biomaterials and also in the construction industry.

Josette has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed international journals and her work is cited over 5000 times. She has been awarded the Louis Grossman Prize by the French Endodontic Society in 2018 and is the only female recipient of this prestigious award. She is the Editor of Mineral trioxide aggregate. From preparation to application published by Springer in 2014. She is a contributing author to the 7th edition of Harty’s Endodontics in Clinical Practice (Editor: BS Chong) and Glass ionomer cements in Dentistry (Editor: SK Sidhu). She is an associate editor for Scientific Reports and Endo, a reviewer of a number of international journals and an international lecturer.

 Antonis Chaniotis

Chaniotis Antonis graduated from the University of Athens Dental School, Greece (1998). In 2003 he completed the three-year postgraduate program in Endodontics at the University of Athens Dental School. Since 2003, he owns a limited to microscopic Endodontics private practice in Athens, Greece. For the last ten years, he served as a clinical instructor affiliated with the undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the University of Athens, Athens Dental School, Endodontic department, Greece. In 2012 he was awarded the title of Clinical fellow teacher at the University of Warwick, Warwick dentistry UK. Luis Chavez de Paz

Luis obtained his dental degree in 1998 from the University of San Marcos in Lima, Peru. In 2000 he obtained a Master of Science degree in Odontology from the University of Gothenburg, and in 2005 he defended a doctoral thesis at the same institution. Luis doctoral thesis comprised clinical and experimental work that focused on bacteria that persisted during and after root canal treatment. For several years as a post doc and researcher at the Department of Oral Biology at Malmö University, Luis worked intensely on oral microbial biofilms, and the different aspects of the physiology of oral microbial communities and specific microbial stress responses. Luis has authored several publications with high citation ranks, textbook chapters and he is recurrently invited to lecture for endodontic societies and endodontic group studies where he covers microbial aspects of persisting root canal infections and microbial biofilms. In 2015 the book ‘The Root canal Biofilm’ was published, where Luis served as co-editor. Luis currently practices clinical endodontics in the Stockholm region.

Luis research interests cover the main areas of oral and endodontic microbiology, with particular focus on microbial biofilms. Within these areas, Luis’s research has centered on studying the physiology of endodontic bacteria and their molecular responses to stress. Luis has authored several publications in scientific journals including reviews and textbook chapters, all with high citation ranks. Luis serve as an advisor in scientific boards of the Journal of Endodontics and International Endodontic Journal.

Elisabetta Cotti, DDS, MS, received her DDS from the University of Cagliari – Italy and the specialty and MS in Endodontics from the University of Loma Linda- California. Since 2000, she is Professor of Restorative Dentistry and Endodontics, and the Chairman of the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics at the School of Dentistry, University of Cagliari- Italy. She is currently the Director of the Post Graduate programme (Master) in Clinical Endodontics at the University of Cagliari. She teaches in the Advanced Education Programs in Endodontics at the University of Bologna and she is lecturer in the Department of Endodontics at Loma Linda University, USA. She is active member of the AAE, of the Italian Association of Endodontics (SIE) where she has served as executive member for ten years, of the European Association (ESE) where she has served as Country Delegate for seven years. She is the Past President of the Italian Society of Dental Traumatology (SIDT). She also works in private practice limited to Endodontics. Dr Gilberto Debelian

Dr Gilberto Debelian

Dr. Debelian has completed his specialization in Endodontics from the University of Pennsylvania, USA in 1991 and received the Louis I. Grossman student award in Endodontics. He has taught as a clinical instructor and associate professor at the endodontic program at University of Oslo (UIO), Norway from 1991 to 2010. He has concluded his PhD studies at UIO in 1997, which gave him two scientific awards from the Europen Society of Endodontology (ESE) and from the Norwegian Dental Association both in 1997. His is an adjunct visiting professor at the post-graduate program in endodontics at University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Debelian maintains a private practice limited to endodontics as well as an advance endodontic microscopy center – ENDO INN in Norway. Dr. Debelian has authored 6 chapter books in Endodontics, one book in Endodontics and written more than 80 scientific and clinical papers.

PROF. MONTY DUGGAL Monty obtained his dental degree and MDS in Paediatric Dentistry from India. He then immigrated to the United Kingdom and obtained his FDSRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and his PhD from University of Leeds. He was appointed Professor and Chair of Child Dental Health at Leeds Dental Institute in 1999 where he oversaw a large postgraduate programme in Paediatric Dentistry which has international acclaim. In January 2017 he was appointed as Professor and Head of Paediatric Dentistry in Faculty of Dentistry, National University of Singapore. Prof Duggal has served in various senior positions, and was President of the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry from 2014-2016 and has been on the board of EAPD for last 10 years. Professor Duggal has published over 150 research papers in international journals and is author of “Restorative Techniques in Paediatric Dentistry, which has been published in 7 languages and has sold over 16,000 copies worldwide. He is also a co-author of a textbook on Dental Traumatology and has Co-Edited “Paediatric Dentistry” by Oxford, now in its 5th edition, and more recently “Paediatric Dentistry at a Glance”, published by Blackwell Willey. He has administered research grants totaling over seven million pounds and is an internationally recognised researcher and clinician with main research interest is Cariology and Translation Research in Clinical Paediatric Dentistry, including dental traumatology. Apart from Paediatric Dentistry his main interest is playing and watching cricket and any time spare from work and family is devoted to this important activity

Hal Duncan: BDS, FDS RCS, MClin Dent(Endo), MRD RCS, PhD

A University of Glasgow graduate, he initially worked in general dental practice, various dental schools as well as several specialist endodontic practices in Northern Ireland and England. He received postgraduate endodontic speciality training in Guy’s Hospital from 2002-2006, which included a collaborative research study with Dr Ram Nair (in the University of Zurich) on MTA pulp capping. He has worked since 2008 at Trinity College Dublin as an Academic Consultant in Endodontics, while completing an external PhD in the University of Birmingham with Professor’s Cooper and Smith and Dr Garry Fleming in the area of epigenetics, pulpal regeneration and biomaterials in 2016. In 2013 and 2016 he received two (IADR and EMBO-sponsored) fellowships in New York University with Profs Nicola Partridge and Emi Shimizu on the role of epigenetic-modifying agents on pulpal mineralisation. He is currently the principal supervisor for several clinical and scientifically trained PhD students in basic translational pulp biology. He has received several research grants as a principal investigator, has written ten book chapters and edited 2 textbooks including “Clinical approaches in endodontic regeneration - Current and emerging therapeutic perspectives”. In addition he has published multiple articles in peer-reviewed international journals and is an Associate Editor for the International Endodontic Journal. He is a committee member of the Irish Division of the IADR, the Chair of the European Society of Endodontology (ESE) Membership Committee and a member of the ESE Executive Board. He is a past president of the Irish Endodontic Society and holds an honorary senior lecturer position in the University of Birmingham.

Justin Durham

 Justin Durham

Justin is a Professor of Orofacial Pain and Deputy Dean of Clinical Medicine at Newcastle University and an Honorary Consultant Oral Surgeon at Newcastle-Upon-Tyne’s Hospitals’ NHS Foundation Trust in the UK.

Justin was appointed Clinical Fellow/Hon SpR in Oral Surgery at Newcastle University in 2003. He obtained his PhD, “Ideologies and outcomes in Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD)”, from Newcastle University in 2008. He subsequently completed his Oral Surgery specialist training and also became the first person in the UK to pass the American Board of Orofacial Pain. He held a prestigious NIHR Clinician Scientist award from 2012-2017, which funded his research into the care pathways in chronic orofacial pain and was promoted to a personal chair in 2017. In his clinical practice he has established and leads a multidisciplinary orofacial pain clinic that receives tertiary-level referrals from both dental and medical specialities in the North of England.

In addition to holding a prestigious NIHR award he has previously received the outstanding post-doctoral award from the Behavioural, Epidemiology, and Health Services Research group of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR), for his research into TMDs. His teaching was also acknowledged through the Vice-chancellor’s award for excellence in teaching and learning and he also received the IADR Education Research Faculty award in 2010.

His primary research interests are in orofacial pain both at the first and second translational research gaps. He has wide experience in a variety of methodologies involved in health services research. He is also keenly interested in helping develop the next generation of clinical academics and as such is involved nationally with NIHR as the Acting Associate Dean for Dental Integrated Academic Training and locally as Director of Newcastle University’s Faculty of Medical Sciences’ fellowship support programme for clinicians applying for externally funded research fellowships.

Until 2018 treatment of 7000 dental trauma cases, publication of 85 scientific papers (main publication language: German), 300 oral presentations, 13 scientific prizes. Foundation of an own dental trauma working group within the Austrian Dental Association (1995), organization of 11 national congresses on the dental trauma topic. Ikhlas El Karim

 Ikhlas El Karim

Dr Ikhlas El Karim graduated from Faculty of Dentistry University of Khartoum 1989 and completed higher specialist training in Restorative Dentistry at the School of Dentistry Queen’s University Belfast. She completed PhD on pulpal neurogenic inflammation in response to caries in 2003. She is currently Senior lecturer and consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the School of Medicine Dentistry and Biological Sciences, Queen University Belfast with joint affiliation to the Centre for Dentistry and the Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine where her research group is based. Her research focuses on developing minimally invasive, biologically based endodontic therapies, with particular interest in investigating the link between pain, inflammation and regeneration as well as the implications of endodontic infections on general health. She is a principal investigator on many funded grants and supervises a research team of PhD students, postdoctoral research assistant and technician. Dr El Karim present her work nationally and internationally, has may peer reviewed publications, co-authored book chapter and is a council member of the Irish Division of the International association of Dental Research.

Dr Ashraf Elayouti

Dr Ashraf ElAyouti received Bachelor degree in dentistry and doctor of dental surgery in 1988, Alexandria University. After serving 2 years in the Marine as a dental surgeon and another 5 years at the University of Hamburg, he received his doctoral degree, Dr. med. dent., in 1998. Subsequently he worked at the department of Conservative Dentistry, Division of Endodontology, Tübingen University. Since January 2005, head of Endodontology (prov.) and senior lecturer and supervisor of doctoral and research programs in Endodontology and associate Professor. His main research interests are physical properties of dentin and 3-D Dental Imaging.

Dr Obyda Essam

Obyda is a specialist in Endodontics and a lecturer in Endodontology at the University of Liverpool in the UK. He qualified from Newcastle University and completed his foundation training at the Northern Dental Deanery. He worked in a number of general dental practices in the North East. Obyda later gained Membership of the Joint Dental Faculty at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in London (MJDF RCS Eng). He joined Liverpool University in 2014 and was appointed as a Teaching Fellow in Endodontology and an honorary academic speciality registrar where he completed 3 years full-time clinical specialist training in Endodontics. During his clinical training, he was awarded the research young educator grant the European Society of Endodontology for his ongoing research which focuses on accurate assessment of complex endodontic cases and the development of the Endodontic Complexity Assessment Tool (E-CAT). Obyda was awarded a Doctorate degree in Endodontics (DDsc) from Liverpool University. Following to the collegiate speciality examination, he successfully attained Membership in Endodontics (MEndo) from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and is now registered as a Specialist in Endodontics with the General Dental Council in the United Kingdom. He is currently appointed as a lecturer at the University of Liverpool and an honorary Speciality Doctor by the RLBUH trust. He works in several private specialist referral practices in the north west of England. Obyda has lectured and delivered workshops at the BDSA and BDA British national dental conferences. Helena Fransson, D.D.S., Odont.Dr. (Ph.D.) is Associate Professor in the Department of Endodontics, Faculty of Odontology, Malmö University, Sweden. Dr. Fransson graduated in dentistry from the University of Lund 1998, and completed postgraduate clinical training in endodontics at Malmö University (2007), where she also completed her research training. Her doctoral thesis on the repair of the dentine barrier following pulp capping led to the doctoral degree (Odont.Dr.) in 2012 and she holds a docenture since 2017. Her current research focuses on the outcome of endodontic and caries treatments, and she is conducting clinical studies and data mining in registries. She is a driving force behind the Scandinavian Research Collaboration (EndoReCo), a collaboration striving to increase the knowledge about the root-filled tooth. As most research of today is based on collaboration rather than on individual achievements, the EndoReCo collaboration aims to provide a nourishing research environment for the current six PhD-students pursuing joint research plans. Kerstin Galler obtained her degree in dentistry from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich in 2000. She worked in Private Practice until 2002 and then joined the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Periodontology at the University of Regensburg, Germany. She received post-doctoral training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston from 2004 to 2006, and earned her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Rice University in Houston in 2009. Dr. Galler is currently Associate Professor and leader of the section of Endodontology and Dental Traumatology at the University of Regensburg. Her time is divided between clinical work with focus on endodontology and restorative dentistry, teaching as senior lecturer and clinical instructor, and research. Her research group works on tunable hydrogel scaffolds and dental stem cells for dental pulp tissue engineering and regenerative endodontics, on dentin matrix proteins and on biofilm-associated reactions of the pulp tissue. Dr. Galler was President of the Pulp Biology and Regeneration Group of IADR in 2013/14, and led the committee for the ESE Position Statement on Revitalization. Dr. Markus Haapasalo (DDS, PhD, Fellow of RCDC (endodontics)) received his dental degree from the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Helsinki, Finland in 1978. Håvard J. Haugen is currently professor and leader of the Biomaterials group at The Institute of Clinical Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Oslo. He received a Master in chemical engineering at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London, UK in 2001 and a doctoral engineering in biomaterials from the Technische Universität München in 2004. Previously Haugen has been working at the Central Institute for Medical Engineering in Munich (2001-2004), at Helmholtz Institute for Biomedical Engineering in Aachen (1999) and the Tissue Engineering Centre at Imperial College, London (2000-2001).

Haugen has been granted more than 10 million Euros in various research grants the past five years from both the European Research Council and the Research Council of Norway. Haugen has about eighty publications, and has been awarded the British Petroleum Prize in 2000, University of Oslo Innovation Prize in 2008 and the German innovation award for 2009 (Innovationspreis 2009 der Deutschen BioRegionen). Thomas Kvist has practiced general dentistry in Sweden and in Sorrento, Italy. He completed specialization in endodontics in 1993 and received his PhD in 2001 at the Department of Endodontology, University of Gothenburg, Sweden where he is presently head and holding a position as associate professor. For several years, he was director of the postgraduate program and head of the Specialist Clinic for Endodontics at Public Dental Service in Gothenburg. He has published articles in peer-reviewed journals on decision-making and clinical outcome in endodontics. Prof. Zvi Metzger graduated from the Hebrew University School of Dental Medicine in Jerusalem in 1970. Since 1973 he has been on the faculty at the Tel Aviv University School of Dental Medicine, where he served as Dean in the years 1987-1991. He received postgraduate training at Columbia University, Department of Endodontics, N.Y. and at the Department of Oral Surgery and Oral Radiology, School of Dental Medicine, Graz, Austria. There he served as full time faculty from 1993 until 2005. He spent almost one year at the Department of OMFS, Kings College, Guy’s Hospital, London, U.K. From 1993-2017 Dr Pertl was part of the adjunct faculty at the School of Dental Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. He joined Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston as a full time visiting associate professor from 1998-1999 and since then as part time faculty. Since 2005 he maintains a private practice in Graz and serves as a lecturer at the Schools of Dental Medicine of Graz and Vienna. Ove A. Peters, DMD, MS, PhD, is tenured professor and the Chair of the Department of Endodontics, as well as Director of the Advanced Education Program in Endodontology, at the University of the Pacific in San Francisco, California. He earned his dental degree from the University of Kiel, Germany, his endodontic certificates first in 2001 from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, and then again along with an MS degree in 2006 from the University of California, San Francisco. Maria Pigg, D.D.S., Odont.Dr. (Ph.D.) is an associate professor in the Department of Endodontics, Faculty of Odontology, Malmö University. Dr. Pigg graduated with a degree in dentistry from the University of Gothenburg 1993, and obtained postgraduate clinical training in endodontics at Malmö University, where she also completed her research training. Her doctoral thesis on diagnostics in chronic intraoral pain led to a doctoral degree obtained in 2011 and she has also held a docenture since 2017.

Dr. Pigg’s current research focuses on the development and validation of clinical diagnostic methods in acute and chronic orofacial pain. She frequently lectures on acute and chronic dental pain including differential diagnostics and has co-authored review articles and book chapters on persistent dentoalveolar pain, neuropathic orofacial pain and endodontic emergencies.

Dr. Pigg is a member of the Swedish Endodontic Society, the European Society of Endodontology, the American Association of Endodontists, and the International Association for the Study of Pain. Leo Tjäderhane was born 1962 in Ylitornio, Lapland, Finland. He graduated from the University Oulu, Finland in 1986, where he also received his PhD in 1995 and the licensed specialty in Cariology, Restorative dentistry and Endodontology in 2000. He worked as the post-doctoral fellow at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vacouver, Canada, in 1995-1996, as an assistant professor at the Department of Endodontology, University of Toronto in 2001-2002 and at the University of Helsinki, Finland in 2002-2003. Later, he worked as a research fellow for the Academy of Finland in 2003-2008, after which he was appointed as a professor at the University of Oulu in 2008. He is currently holding the position as the professor and head of the Division of Cariology and Endodontology at the University of Helsinki, where he is also the head of the undergraduate dental program and the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases (Formerly the Institute of Dentistry). He also has a part time research manager position at the University of Oulu. Leo’s research interests include the dentin-pulp complex biology and pathology and the adhesion of composites. Phil Tomson is a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Head of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics at the Institute of Clinical Sciences, School of Dentistry, University of Birmingham, UK. He is a Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry with Birmingham Community Healthcare Foundation Trust, joint service lead for Endodontics and the Designated Individual for the Human Tissue Authority at Birmingham Dental Hospital & School.

Phil initially worked in general dental practice, followed by several hospital jobs developing clinical skills across a range of disciplines. He then took up an academic higher clinical specialty training post in restorative dentistry and received his Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship in 2011; Phil holds specialist registration with the GDC in Endodontics, Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics.

He completed his PhD in 2013 with research focused on material directed regeneration of the dentine-pulp complex, for which he won the Wladimir Adlivankine ESE research prize. Phil was one of the first recipients of the prestigious FDS research fellowships from the RCS of England. His current research interests lie in tissue regeneration and engineering of the dental pulp, clinical outcomes in pulp therapy, therapeutic methods in irrigating the root canal system and novel methods of assessing root canal disinfection. He currently supervises several PhD and Master’s research students, has had numerous articles published in international peer-reviewed journals, is a member of the Editorial Board of the International Endodontic Journal and is a Council member for the British Endodontic Society.

Dr Tugba Turk

Dr Tugba Turk

Tugba Turk is an Associate Professor at the Department of Endodontology, Ege University, School of Dentistry, Izmir, Turkey. She is also lecturer at University of Rome, La Sapienza, Dental School, Italy. She received her DDS degree from the Ege University where she also completed her Ph.D. and received an associate professor degree in 2017.

As a full-time faculty member, Dr. Turk is involved with undergraduate and graduate teaching, and she supervises Ph.D. students. She has published several articles, received several awards for her scientific studies and has presented lectures both nationally and internationally. She is a member of the European Society of Endodontology, the Turkish Endodontic Society and The Society of Stem Cell and Cellular Treatments.

Dr. Turk’s research interests include minimal invasive endodontics, regenerative endodontics, dental stem cells, tissue engineering, and scanning electron microscopy. She actively performs clinical regenerative endodontic therapies involving a large number of patients.

Luc van der Sluis

Luc graduated in 1985 at the Academic Centre Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), the Netherlands, where he successfully completed the postgraduate endodontic program in 1993 under the guidance of prof. dr. P.R. Wesselink. He received his PhD degree in 2007 with the supervisors prof. dr. P.R. Wesselink and dr. M-K. Wu. Since 1993 Luc workes in a practice limited to Endodontics and held a position in research and teaching until 2010 at the Department of Cariology, Endodontology and Pedodontology at ACTA. From 2010 until 2012, Luc worked as professor at the University of Toulouse (France). Actually Luc is head of the Center for Dentistry and Oral Health at the University Medical Center of Groningen in the Netherlands and is Principal Investigator at the Kolff Institute (University of Groningen). Furthermore, he is (co)author of book chapters in international text books. Luc is frequently invited as invited lecturer on international conferences. The current focus of his research is the prevention of apical periodontitis, disinfection of the carious lesion and root canal system, which he systematically investigates with specialists in biofilm research, fluid dynamics and (sono) chemistry.

Suzette van der Waal

 Suzette van der Waal

Suzette van der Waal, DDS, PhD, graduated in 1991 and finished the post-graduate program in endodontology in 2009 (both at ACTA; Academic Centre Dentistry Amsterdam). In 2015, she defended her PhD thesis ‘A new strategy in root canal therapy; there’s a lot going on in endodontic disinfection’ about novel and current endodontic disinfection methods (University of Amsterdam). Currently, she works in a private practice limited to endodontics. She also holds a position as assistant professor at ACTA, departments Endodontology and Preventive Dentistry. She teaches undergraduate dental students and post-graduate students program endodontology and is involved in several clinical studies as principal, coordinating or executive investigator. One of which is ‘The influence of apical periodontitis on the concentration of inflammatory mediators in peripheral blood plasma and the metagenomic profiling of endodontic infections.’ She is chair of the scientific committee of the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Endodontology, the Dutch endodontic society.

Dr Marco Versiani

Dr Marco Versiani

Dr. Versiani received his degree in Dentistry in 1992. Since 1994, he has been working part-time in the Brazilian Military Police Dental Department in which he reached the grade of Lieutenant Colonel. He is a certified specialist in Endodontics (1999), but also in Didactics (1998) and Bioethics (2003). In 2015, Dr. Versiani concluded his Master Degree and PhD studies, as well as 3 postdoctoral programs, at the University of Sao Paulo, in which he is currently a researcher fellow. He has authored books, several chapters and more than 80 peer-reviewed papers in endodontics, being an editorial board member of the International Endodontic Journal. More recently, he published the book 'Root Canal Anatomy in Permanent Dentition'. Dr. Versiani has lectured worldwide focusing on his main research interests that are the influence of root canal anatomy on endodontic procedures using non-invasive 3D X-ray micro-computed tomography, towards the improvement of both chemical and mechanical debridement of root canals.

Helmut Walsch

 Helmut Walsch

Dr. Helmut Walsch graduated from the Dental School of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich, Germany in 1994, where he also received his doctoral degree in 1996. He completed the full time postgraduate Endodontic program at the University of Pennsylvania in 2000 and received the best case presentation and teaching awards. Dr. Walsch earned a Master of Science in Endodontics/Oral Biology degree in 2001 at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a founding member, specialist member and former board member of the German Society of Endodontology (today German Society of Endodontology and Dental Traumatology). He maintains a private practice limited to Micro-Endodontics and Endodontic Microsurgery in Munich since 2001 and serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Endodontic Department, University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Walsch is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics since 2006, recertified in 2016. He is an active member of the AAE, certified member of the ESE and EDA (European Dental Association), honorary member of the VDZE (Association of German Certified Endodontists), member of the Louis I. Grossman Endodontic Study Club, the German Study Group of Microscopy in Dentistry, and the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Endodontics. He lectures nationally and internationally on various Endodontic topics, and holds numerous CE demo- and hands-on courses.

Dr Matthias Widbiller

Dr Matthias Widbiller

Dr. Matthias Widbiller received his degree in dentistry from the University of Regensburg in the year 2013. He immediately joined the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Periodontology at the University Hospital Regensburg as dentist and research fellow. Matthias Widbiller is university lecturer for conservative dentistry and directing a patient course in this subject.

Further, he is certified endodontist by DGZ/DGET/APW/DGZMK and clinically focused on dental traumatology, vital pulp therapy and endodontic regeneration. Since 2016, Dr. Widbiller is overseeing the Center of Dental Traumatology at the University Hospital Regensburg.

From 2017 to 2019, he received a post-doctoral training at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) in the research lab of Dr. Kenneth M. Hargreaves and Dr. Anibal Diogenes. His areas of research include dental pulp tissue engineering, bioactive materials and bioactive proteins in dentin matrix. Dr. Widbiller has published numerous articles in the field of pulp biology and dental pulp tissue engineering, received several awards for his scientific work, has lectured extensively nationally and internationally in clinical as well as scientific meetings, and is part of the scientific advisory board of the Journal of Endodontics.

Dag Ørstavik

 Dag Ørstavik

Dag Ørstavik is professor emeritus at the University of Oslo (UiO), where he was Head of the Department of Endodontics from 2004 to 2016. He graduated as a dentist from UiO in 1969, where he also took his PhD in Oral Microbiology in 1977 and completed the specialization program in endodontics in 1984. Dr. Ørstavik worked as scientist/senior scientist at the Nordic Institute of Dental Materials (NIOM) from 1978 to 2004, interrupted by 2 years as visiting professor at the Department of Endodontics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 1993-1995. He has maintained a part-time private practice with endodontics throughout his career. His research has focused on mechanisms of dental plaque formation; physical, chemical, biological and antimicrobial properties of endodontic filling materials; and clinical studies on factors influencing treatment outcome in endodontics.
